Better learning with new nerve cells?

New nerve cells are reproduced for life, also in humans. This happens in the hippocampus, an important brain centre for learning and memory. What role do newly formed nerve cells play in learning new information or replacing old information or forgetting – during child development, in adults and in old age? What can researchers learn from new nerve cells? How are new cells integrated into existing networks? Finally, what therapeutic possibilities are opened up by this new form of cellular plasticity in the central nervous system?
The lecture gave an overview of this exciting and still young field of brain research.
